Scan profiles can be scheduled to run automatically by scan age and/or time schedule triggers (Enterprise mode required). For example, the prebuilt scan profile, Standard, (set initially as the Default scan profile) is already configured using a scan age of 7 days (Options > Scan Profiles, double-click Standard, then click the Triggers tab). This means that any computer scanned by this profile will be scanned 7 days after the last time it was scanned. For details about scheduling scans, see Creating a New Scan Profile, Part 2: Automatic Scanning.
PDQ Inventory uses an automatic heartbeat process to determine when computers are online. Heartbeat uses a ping (ICMP Echo) to verify that a computer is online. For the heartbeat process to work correctly, you must be able to ping your computers without a firewall blocking ICMP Echo requests. To configure heartbeat settings, see Network in Preferences.
The Offline Settings use heartbeat to determine what to do with computers that are offline at the time of a scan. For details, see Offline Settings on the Scanning page in Preferences.
While heartbeats are not technically scans, they can be used to determine if a scan should be initiated. For example, the prebuilt scan profile, Standard, has a scan age schedule set (by default) to 7 days. This means computers that haven't received the Standard scan after 7 days will have that scan sent out. If a computer is offline at the time the scan is sent out, it would not receive the scan. When it comes back online, however, the Heartbeat would trigger the Standard scan profile to initiate.
